DIRECTION AND EDITING WITH FERNANDO FRANCO

DIRECTION AND EDITING WITH FERNANDO FRANCO

The workshop is looking to honor the famous Sidney Lumet quote that a script is written three times. We begin with the written script and observe how it metamorphoses on the basis of the storytelling decisions made during the shoot and that blossom somehow or other during rehearsals. We shall see how thoroughness and commitment are the guides upon which we build our mise-en-scène, advancing from what we want to say to the way we plan to do it. And once the film has been shot, and the written script has passed on to a better life, we shall see how editing is the third rewriting phase that produces the definitive script, i.e. the finished movie.

PROGRAMME

  1. The script as dead matter. Notes on scriptwriting in relation to mise-en-scène
  2. The rehearsal: scale, lie detection, blocking
  3. Wildcards or Kulechov effect in the structure
  4. Mise-en-scène vs actor performance
  5. Continuity vs discontinuity
  6. A million places to put the camera vs the place where it should be
  7. Camera movement, a moral issue
  8. Takes as tools: inverse technical and actor curve
  9. Priorities and sacrifices for mise-en-scène
  10. Mise-en-scène designed for editing
  11. Conclusion: coherence and rigor in mise-en-scène
