You were waiting for it! We know that you like to know the personal choice of the director of D’A Film Festival Barcelona, Carlos R. Ríos, from among the more than 45 films that the festival brings us this year. You can now add them to your list and watch them from May 1 at Filmin.
THE TWENTIETH CENTURY
Total madness! Bizarre, fetishist, queer, freaky, hyperbolical and a thousand other things in this delightful feast for the senses that Guy Maddin would have been proud of. [More info]
ROUBAIX, UNE LUMIÈRE
Desplechin orchestrates a social police drama in one of the most impoverished cities in France. The film narrates the day-to-day life at the cop station, a natural down-to-earth portrayal, looking in depth at the characters, their backgrounds, their life stories and their yearnings. A wonderfully incisive movie about fear of “the other”. [More info]
SATURDAY FICTION
Bravo Lou Ye! The director of Suzhou River and Blind Massage is back with a megaproduction, a period drama set a week before the attack on Pearl Harbor, shot in glamorous black and white with a marvellous Gong Li illuminating the screen.[More info]
LOS SONÁMBULOS & ALGUNAS BESTIAS
Both Los sonámbulos and Algunas bestias are sharp, accurate portrayals of families enclosed in their country homes, with the consequent games that this leads to: goading, teenagers at the height of sexual revolution, arguments between in-laws, unresolved tensions, the revealing of big secrets … Pressure cookers that are constantly boiling. AZNAVOUR BY CHARLES (LE REGARD DE CHARLES)
My greatest discovery of the year. It seems that the legendary Charles Aznavour was a budding director, who used his super 8 camera to record everything around him. The result is a video-diary with the warm voice of Romain Duris as the star narrator. [More info]
LOS LOBOS
Samuel Kishi Leopo, director of the delightful Somos Mari Pepa, shows us what happens when a mother and her two children cross the wall that separates the United States and Mexico. The kids, aged eight and five, are forced to spend their lives shut in a tiny home among games, fights, drawings and imagination, and with just one window on the outside world, apart from their thrilling outings in hiding. A film that is emotional without dramatizing and that shows us how children deal with life in confinement. [More info]
TALENTS D’A 2020 SELECTION
Yes, ladies and gentlemen, the whole section. The best selection in years, perfect, balanced, powerful and, now that we have more time and it is easier to organise when to watch, there is no excuse not to see all thirteen films by the most promising male and female directors of our time. All of them focused on being contrarian, fighters, unjust, cruel, naïve, enduring, endearing, deceitful, troublemaking… The perfect radiography of humanity in all of its complexity. [More info]
LA REINA DE LOS LAGARTOS
Burnin’ Percebes are back at D’A, now in super 8, to tell the most beautifully heart-breaking love story in our country’s movie scene. Bruna Cusí (Estiu 1993) plays a single mother who falls in love with an extra-terrestrial (indeed…) played by Javier Botet as he is, with no horrific makeup or costumes. Humour and romance in a free-flowing sci-fi picture that goes right off the radar. [More info]
