With the still recent release of his latest film, Fallen Leaves, we recover seven short films by Aki Kaurismäki shot between 1986 and 2007. The session focuses, especially, on the music videos that the Finnish filmmaker made for the Leningrad Cowboys — the fake rock band, created by himself — before and after the film Leningrad Cowboys Go America, with covers of songs by The Doors or Nancy Sinatra, and a musical parody of Sylvester Stallone’s Rocky saga. The selection is completed with another piece focused on music (Rich Little Bitch, filmed live during a concert by the group Melrose in Helsinki) and with a delicious sketch of working class resistance, Valimo, which was part of the collective film Chacun son cinéma.

His latest film, “Fallen Leaves”, has been a critical and public phenomenon, and won the Jury Prize at Cannes. His cinema, unbribably luminous, the antithesis of Hollywood, flees from grandiloquence and over-gesticulation, explaining small stories of love that have led him to rise as an essential author on the contemporary scene. Much loved by critics, he has won the FIPRESCI Grand Prix three times.
