The Souvenir: Part II

Joanna Hogg

Focus United Kingdom 107 min Fiction

In the aftermath of her tumultuous relationship with a charismatic and manipulative older man, Julie begins to untangle her fraught love for him in making her graduation film, sorting fact from his elaborately constructed fiction. Joanna Hogg’s shimmering story of first love and a young woman’s formative years, The Souvenir. Part II is a portrait of the artist that transcends the halting particulars of everyday life — a singular, alchemic mix of memoir and fantasy.

She mixes audiovisual experimentation with the shooting of mainstream television products. She made her feature film debut in 2007 with Unrelated, many years after having directed the short film Caprice, starring Tilda Swinton. From here, she began a radically personal filmography that led her to be considered one of the greatest names in contemporary cinema and to win a Jury Prize at Sundance, among others.
