The D’A – Barcelona Film Festival continues to be a showcase for the best independent cinema of the moment and an opportunity to discover some of the most outstanding films of the year, the big names that have triumphed at international festivals and the new films by essential filmmakers. D’A 2025 will premiere in Spain The Shrouds, the latest film by maestro David Cronenberg, a film that premiered worldwide at Cannes 2024, starring Vincent Cassel, Diane Kruger and Guy Pearce. Other essential names are Dea Kulumbegashvili who, with her second film, April, won the special jury prize at Venice 2024 and the award for best film in the Zabaltegi section at San Sebastian; or Simón de la montaña, by Argentine director Luis Felipe, who has become one of the phenomena of the year after triumphing at Cannes with the Critics’ Week Grand Prix.
Other sensations of the season are Love, by Norwegian Dag Johan Haugerud, the second part of a trilogy dedicated to contemporary relationships that began with Sex and culminates these days at the Berlinale with Dreams; The Universal Language, by Matthew Rankin, winner of the audience award at the Cannes Film Festival 2024 and best Canadian film at TIFF; Viet and Nam, by Vietnamese filmmaker Truong Min Quy, with one of the most powerful queer films of the year, seen at Cannes 2024; Bagger Drama, by Piet Baumgartner, a film that was a hit at the last San Sebastian festival, where it won the New Directors section award. These names of emerging filmmakers are joined by two festival favourites, the Argentine Matías Piñeiro with his latest work, Tú me abrasas, premiered at the Berlinale 2024; and La Prisonnière de Bordeaux, by the great Patricia Mazuy, a French director who is consolidating a very personal career, here in a film starring the great lady of French cinema, Isabelle Huppert.
