Synopsis

Noa, a gypsy transgender woman, leaves prison determined to obtain proper housing to regain custody of her twin boys (12) guarded by the State. Noa survived prostituting herself and now she wants the home she never had, but the State won’t release the kids until they are 18. This situation pushes Noa to a new paradigm: start from scratch and become a mother again. Noa isn’t alone, her cousin Mary Karmen, an intersex gipsy squatter activist who is her faithful squire and will accompany her in her journey.

She is a photographer and journalist. She has been awarded three World Press Photo awards: in 2001, she got the 2nd prize in General News for a photo of the landing of “pateras” on the coast of Tarifa; in 2005, she got an Honorable Mention for her work on the trafficking of Nigerian women; and in 2012, she got the 2nd prize in Contemporary Stories for a series of portraits about survivors of child abuse. Papamama is her first feature film.
