The D’A celebrates the 60th anniversary of Cannes Critics’ Week
This year marks the 60th anniversary of the first edition of the Critics’ Week, the oldest of the parallel sections of the Cannes Festival. Since 1962, the French Syndicate of Film Critics has organized alternative programming that focuses on emerging filmmakers, authors who are just presenting their first or second film and who often go unnoticed in the official competition for the Palme d’Or, which is more focused on in the names already consecrated. Thus, throughout these six decades, the Critics’ Week has become the space that has made known to the world some of the key figures of contemporary cinema, from Arnaud Desplechin to Andrea Arnold, young promises that a few years later the great festivals are eager to present. The D’A Film Festival Barcelona is the only event in Spain that participates in the celebration of this anniversary with a focus of eleven films, one per each year of life of the festival. A retrospective of the best that has passed through the Semaine between 2011 and 2021, which gathers the essence of this off section of Canes: the promotion of new voices in the cinematographic panorama beyond the established canon.
