Un Impulso Colectivo, Season Two: Women Auteurs’ Cinema
Un Impulso Colectivo, the D’A podcast, returns with a second season in which we continue to explore auteur cinema in both Catalan and Spanish contexts. However, this time, we have chosen to focus on a form of cinema that has been emerging with strength for years and that we, as a festival, have witnessed firsthand. That is, cinema led by women: women auteurs’ filmmaking.
This is why, under the title “They Speak” and under the guidance of film critic and programmer Eulàlia Iglesias, we have structured this second season from a comprehensive perspective, as revealed by the titles of its five episodes: “The Arrival”, “The Process”, “The Creation”, “The Response”, and “The Exit”. Throughout them, perspectives, professions, and circumstances intertwine to shape a body of work that, in some way, represents a type of cinema and perhaps that elusive concept of “the female gaze”. But not only that—we also ask much more practical and down-to-earth questions, which are no less compelling: Has the way we teach cinema changed? Is there an awareness of women’s filmmaking in education? And, in the act of creation itself, is cinema led by women different? Is it different in front of the camera, or also behind it? Are there alternative ways of working, promoting, and exhibiting cinema?
We discuss everything from education and theory to the process of making films, and later, teaching, promoting, and preserving them. Because Un Impulso Colectivo, both as a podcast and as a section of the D’A Festival, and ultimately the practice of filmmaking and film exhibition, carries within it the essential goal of passing on new perspectives—ones that rejuvenate those that become stagnant.

This podcast is a river. And a river always begins with a source. In this case, the source of knowledge provided by voices such as María Adell, professor, critic, and programmer; Marta Armengou, journalist; María Zafra, professor, filmmaker, and director of the Mostra de Films de Dones; and Yolanda Olmos, producer and director of Dones Visuals. This source flows, descends, and is nourished by other springs, streams, and rains—fresh waters like those of young filmmakers Maria Bareche, Clara Barfull, Marina Freixa, Sofía Esteve, and Maria Riera. They are directors, screenwriters, editors, or producers whose works we have had the chance to watch—and enjoy—on the screens of D’A. Alongside them are major tributaries, well-established voices such as directors Elena Martín, Gala Hernández López, and Laura Ferrés, as well as producers Marta Cruañas, Gema Arquero, and Carla Sospedra. Together, they transform the questions we pose into a vast sea of certainties, reflections, and also new and relevant doubts—ones that, ultimately, will shape the challenges, interests, and visions of our future. Both that of our society and of our cinema.
