For a New Beauty

At D’A we have always defended that there is not just one Spanish cinema, but many. And that all of them are capable of co-existing as long as the right circumstances are given, those that festivals like ours try to promote and encourage. That does not prevent, however, the existence of a section like Un Impulso Colectivo from revealing our vocation for images that want to be different, that make a virtue of their humility, and do not give up on their efforts to invent new languages. Because that is the best way to face the cinema that needs the most care. At this point in the 21st century, that cinema is still under construction. It refuses to fall asleep on the goals achieved. And that is why it is now more diverse than ever, it is still in turmoil, without stopping or stabilizing, because perhaps doing so would mean its disappearance. Let no one be surprised, therefore, by the apparent chaos that seems to reign in this edition of Un Impulso Colectivo: films of all kinds, regardless of budget, genre, format or length. The lack of coherence and the absence of rules are the only rules.

We are in a moment of transition, one of those that have been so abundant in Spanish cinema. And that intermediate moment, that space “between” other spaces, is proving to be extremely enriching. That is why we renounce all unity. We want to be disorderly in the conviction that only from that confusion, from that anarchy, will a “new cinema” or even “another cinema” be born, but rather a new beauty, which will find its reason for being precisely in not being anything yet and, nevertheless, maintaining the hope of being everything. To immerse oneself in Un Impulso Colectivo this year is to be propelled towards a thousand different places. And none of them can be considered definitive, but neither can they be considered dispensable.
